Have some panic.

Utterly ridiculous. Junior High boy got suspended for the rest of the year, missed the school dance, and the class trip. Because he wore a dress. Oh NOES, a DRESS! Suspension was later reduced, but not until he'd already missed the dance and class trip.

Here's one with a picture of the dress and shoes.

Why are people so completely stupid that anybody even gives a crap if a kid wears heels to school on a dare? For that matter, why is it even dare-worthy? Never mind. It's dare-worthy because people care, so just refer to the first question, I guess.

Anyway, have some blow-up overreaction, shall we? I mean really--if you can't handle the way he's dressed, send him home to change. But suspend him for the rest of the damn year? Get a life and a sense of proportion.

Sounds like he was asked to go home and change. It was when he called the dean "sexist" that he got suspended.

However, I agree whole-heartedly, who the hell cares if a boy wears a dress and heels to school! He looked quite nice, I thought. Lovely dress, though perhaps a touch low cut for that age. (that's the conservative in me talking...)

Yeah, higher heels than I'd have chosen, but it's not like he looks skanky. And I also think saying "that's sexist" is not a good reason for extended suspension. Maybe that's because I agree with the kid? (Not that it's sexism so much as homophobia, but whatever.) Unless the he was screaming and swearing while calling the sending home to be sexist, I still fail to find the punishment in proportional.

Oh if his mom had dared ME to wear those heels to school, I'd have just given her the win from the get-go. My "dress shoes" are Sketchers. :) And if I had been the dean, I'd have said something to the effect of "not everyone in this school is as creative and open-minded as you and I regarding gender roles and images, and so you are creating a lot of distraction dressed as you are. I'd ask you to please go home and change, though I cannot force you to do so, as you do not specifically violate the school's dress code." Unless he acted a total twit, there would have been no suspension at all, even if he chose to remain in the dress the rest of the day. Which, as I recall, 8th grade boys dressed as girls acted really really obnoxious back in the 80's. So really, who knows.

Heh. See, that's being all reasonable and stuff. If the principal had been reasonable, there wouldn't be a news story for me to get all in a twist over. :P

And yeah, it's not like this is the first time a boy's ever worn a dress. I really doubt that kids were falling over in shock. There was probably some giggling, and sarcastic comments, but I bet the teachers were more upset about it than the rest of the students.
