the international news... sprouts are bad for you. The e. coli outbreak in Germany has reached nearly 50 dead and 4,000 ill. The farm that sold the sprouts has gone out of business, and the authorities have been unable to trace back the source of the seeds (FAIL!).

An as-yet small outbreak in France may be related, but that has yet to be proven.

Since nobody knows where the seeds came from, or at what point the sprouts were contaminated, authorities are warning of the potential for other outbreaks.

This far from the first outbreak of disease associated with sprouts, it's just the biggest.

A little closer to home, there is an ongoing (unrelated) salmonella outbreak from alfalfa sprouts in about 20 people in Idaho, Montana, New Jersey, North Dakota and Washington State.

Long and short: don't eat raw sprouts, don't eat anything that has had raw sprouts on it (just removing the from your sandwich doesn't remove potential contamination of food touching the sprouts!), don't buy sprouts, sprouts are bad.
