He's saying that, because you'd have to use normal mail, the long delays involved would act on him like a saw and cause him to lose his wood.

I direct your attention to the word "been" while easily interpreted as "being" one must consider the possibility it was actually attempting to be the word "bean."

Therefore it follows that the message actually means that his bean would increadibly be sawn. Bean being colloquial british for brain, he seems to be saying that the long distances and times involved in postal mail would be so horrible that his brain would split in two.
