Now, anybody who knows me well, knows that I really like large, short-haired dogs. I'm a mastiff and hound-dog type. So I'm continually surprised at myself for having a Sheltie. He's little, and he's cute, and he's fluffy, and he's totally NOT the kind of dog I ever thought I would have.
He was a rescue from work; this couple brought him in in after he'd been hit by a car. He had a broken radius/ulna--basically simple/straight fracture, no spiraling or open wounds. I explained why a cast wouldn't work well on that (doesn't stop rotation), options for fixing, option of amputation, etc.
They opted to put the dog down. Not because they can't afford to fix or amputate the leg, but because they didn't want to deal with it. Didn't want to have to do any kind of aftercare.
He was only a year old, licking my ear as I examined his obviously painful broken leg -- he never cried or snapped, or acted anything other than completely sweet and friendly.
Now, it so happened that my sister-in-law was looking for a puppy for her niece about this time, so I asked if I could find the dog a new home instead of killing him. The owners agreed, so my boss helped me patch up his leg.
And then my sister-in-law's sister went and got a poodle mix puppy thing from a breeder. And I got stuck with the Sheltie. We've had a few moments (stop chasing the horses, dammit!), but overall, he's a pretty good dog.

(The white bar on the front of his leg is the wrap over the fixator.)
