Fur-babies IX

You've all probably already heard Minnie's tale of woe, since I posted it here last summer when I brought her home. But I'll repeat it anyway, just so I can post pictures of her :)
In August, this dog came in through the local rescue--not a stray, mind you, just that the rescue was picking up the bill because the owners had no money. At the time, we spayed her, and took out an eye. The eye was because it had been injured THREE WEEKS before we saw the dog and had a melting corneal ulcer that was basically the entire cornea. At the time I tried to convince them to just leave me the dog.
They wouldn't.
10 days later, they called because she'd been into a porcupine (obviously keeping her well restrained after her fairly major surgeries!).
5 days after that, they finally brought her in to get the quills pulled. All infected, of course. She'd lost 6 pounds because she hadn't eaten in 5 days. Looked like hell walking. I have no words to express my rage.
So when the owner came to pick her up, I had a nice little talk with her about what a sweet dog this is, and how she deserves the best care she can have. That the fact she's in such rough shape is a direct consequence of not being able to treat her promptly, that dogs are expensive, etc. Told the woman that if she released the dog to the clinic, we would find her a new home where money wasn't such an issue. And that if she did it today, we wouldn't expect her to pay today's bill.
She went out and talked it over with her husband (ie, they argued in the car for about 10 minutes) and then gave me the dog. Which is good, because it means I didn't have to resort to threatening her with the police for negligence.
Since then, Minnie's put on about 10 pounds, and come totally out of her shell--she's bouncy and outgoing and rowdy, runs and wrestles with Haven and my dad's dog. She no longer slams herself down on the floor if you reach out to pat her head, and we're working on some basic commands (she apparently never heard the word "sit" before I got her).
She also thinks gophers are totally fascinating, and I now have ditches across my yard in several places from her excavations of their runs. Ah well. Didn't need that grass anyway, right?

Re: I'd enforce the HELL out of them.
Date: 2008-05-08 06:51 pm (UTC)And yes, a specific list would be helpful--and perhaps a time limit to discourage... leaving the path, as it were.
