Apparently, they just now managed to trace all the illnesses back to one source. Remember all the hullaballoo about how a 48 hour trace back is needed for animals entering the food chain? and how so many farmers threw temper tantrums about how the government was going to ruin their businesses by demanding this? well the government gave up, and so trace back of meat and poultry is sketchy at best, depending on the records of a huge range of processors and farmers, with no standard methods or easy access. Isn't that comforting? Anyway, I don't know if eggs would even be included in that had it been instituted, but there is certainly no real good program for tracing back contaminated food currently. Look how long it took them to figure out where the contaminated salads were packaged last year...
