Botulism

So Bruce and I were just talking about botulism (no, really, just last night) and today, look what's in my inbox!

Mama Rose's Gourmet Foods of Phoenix, AZ is voluntarily recalling Cilantro Con Queso, Garlic Con Queso, Viper Venom Con Queso and Hopi Corn Salsa, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium which can cause life-threatening illness or death. Consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled.

Botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning, can cause the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also be common symptoms. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention.

AND

Hawaii Business Group Incorporated, Barb’s Favorite Recipes, and Ohana Seafoods are recalling Barb’s Local Style Black Bean Sauce and Ohana Flavors Black Bean Sauce because of possible health risks due to the potential growth of Clostridium botulinum.

Hi! I'm just taking advantage of your good nature to ask a bit of unpaid yet still professional advice: Is pork, or pork products, inherently bad for dogs?

Not inherently, no. But most pork is very high fat, which can cause diarrhea and/or pancreatic inflammation, especially in large quantity or in animals with sensitive stomachs.

Actually they're not even mine. It's kinda complicated, but once I accidentally discovered that the person who left them here six years or so ago didn't own them, and then once I tracked down who *did* own them, I found that that person actively doesn't want them back because they were a gift from an ex.

So they're kind of owner free. You take in strays, right? And now I have a better understanding of how they just got abandoned at my house with no one taking responsibility for them.

I was also serious about selling them. That was the "Key To Time" box set, right? Those sell used for better than $50 on eBay. If you're going to watch them, then keep 'em, but if not, sell 'em and donate the money to the non profit. Either way, everyone wins.

Fair enough. I think I'll probably keep them a while more, anyway, and watch them when Bruce is doing something else, because it's been a while since I've seen them.
