Since we hadn't gotten out to look at the plane yesterday, Cap'n Dennis, T, J, and I went to look for it today.
We found it. And we began speculation on exactly what it is that Z smokes while waiting for otters to wander into nets.

This is the "white plane with blue trim, and 2 9's in the tail number" that Z found. We called the number in to see who's plane it was, and went back to Northern Song to ask Z if he is colorblind. Red trim on cream is not the same as blue trim on white!
Pretty overgrown. Z had estimated about 10 years old, which would have put it right in the time frame to have been Smokey's plane. Dennis says "looks like a mighty long 10 years."
Tail number was intact. No 9's involved, just a couple 6's. Maybe Z was standing on his head?

Saw a cormorant on the trip back to Northern Song, but no picture. There were many, many marbled murrelets in pairs and trios, a handful of bald eagles, and a bunch of pigeon guillemots.

Got a call back; this plane wreck was already registered. It was a non-fatality crash in 1965. Smokey's plane is still unfound. Z caught much harassment about numbers and colors over dinner.

5 more otters caught and transmitters implanted, bringing the total up to 30 otters. Very happy otter crew!

Started raining a bit that afternoon, so I spent most of it hanging out on Northern Song reading.

Dinner was halibut (thanks to J and T) with roasted potatoes. Quite yummy!

I am jealous of most of your meals. Though not sure how I'd handle being fed land mammals while on a boat, surrounded by delicious fish! (well, besides my lack of ability to digest land mammals... but it's the principle of the thing!)

She made tofu stuff and lots of veggies for the couple of people on board who did not eat meat. Must be fun trying to cook when you've got 1 person who doesn't eat pork and is allergic to gluten, 2 vegetarians of different strictness, 1 of whom is also lactose intolerant, and a dozen different preferences that don't quite rate as requirements...
And had Bruce been along, he'd have wanted land meat instead of fish the whole time. He may have relented and shared the tofu rather than eat cod or halibut.

Man, I thought me and my friends here were bad, one SEVERELY allergic to pork and otherwise a fish-eating vegetarian, me who eats fish and chicken, two who won't touch fish, and one who won't touch vegetables other than corn and lettuce. About the only thing we all agree on is cheese, and even that has gotten touchy since two are dieting! And that's mildly tricky with a well-stocked Safeway nearby. Wouldn't want to be that cook, would take some serious planning! That's pretty impressive that they make those accommodations. I was expecting that you pretty much ate what was served or went hungry. Or at best made do with an extra dinner roll!

Nope. I ate whatever she cooked for the main course, but also tried some of the tofu stuff. She almost always had the main dinner, and then a couple other things additionally; tofu, or leftovers from something else. 1 boiled potato kept out and not mashed, so the lactose intolerant woman could make a single serving with soy milk... that kind of thing.
