So, to whet your appetite (I can go into more detail, but I would rather give you less than more until you ask):
"The Sky So Big and Black" - awesome strong female character (a rarity in SF) combined with a good story.
"Chung Kuo" - there are eight novels in the series. Eight. It's big and world creating and lots of fun. Ultimately flawed, IMHO, but still a good romp...
And, one more:
"An Exchange of Hostages" (Susan Matthews) - warped, byzantine, awesome character descriptions, dark and twisted.
