to listen to the words on the message? The message which clearly gives the clinic's business hours and then emergency/after hours number and repeats the number, and which message you have to have played through entirely to reach the option of leaving a voice mail?

4 messages on the machine tonight. First message, coded "urgent" is from a woman with a heavy accent who was speaking very rapidly. So accented and rapid that I could not understand her name or the phone number she left, despite listening to the message repeatedly. She has a bitch that whelped 2 weeks ago and "seems to have contracted something". The bitch is very lethargic, she says, and isn't eating. And has been vomiting for four or five days. She's in bad shape and needs "rapid attention." Right. Rapid attention. So rapid that the owner waited 4 days and then called after hours? And couldn't be bothered to actually call the emergency line? We're off to a great start already. So I commence dialing. I try 4 different possible numbers, because I am guessing at what the message says. All 4 numbers (with or without area code) give me various error messages: cannot be completed as dialed, number not in service, etc. So. Guess we'll see if Lena or Luna or Vela or Vena or Beulah or whatever in Hell her name is decides to call back before the poor dog kicks over dead.

The other 3 messages were a grumpy male voice muttering indistinguishably and then hanging up. Typically these types of messages mean someone is calling back trying to get the emergency number written down, but nobody with a matching voice has called the emergency line.
