Really. Sea Kittens? C'mon.

So yeah, conservation is great, I'm totally in favor. And we really DO need to work on preventing over-fishing.

But once again, PeTA is bringing more damage than help to the cause by being utterly ridiculous. Their webpage is blatantly patronizing, and hits the "we're trying so hard to be cute that we are sickening instead" point within 3 sentences. And to answer one of their questions: "Would sea kitten soufflé be a hot seller at the local seafood restaurant?" I'm pretty sure that if that was offered around here, it would be a hit, yes.

Some points I particularly cringed at:

"Most parents would never dream of spending a weekend torturing kittens for fun with their families, but hooking a sea kitten through the mouth and dragging her through the water is the same as hooking a kitten through the mouth and dragging her behind your car," PETA campaign coordinator Ashley Byrne says.

No, no it really is NOT the same AT ALL. Not that I think being hooked through the mouth sounds particularly fun, but in the above (we hope to GOD hypothetical) scenario, the main source of damage to the kitten is the flaying effect of being battered, bounced, and pummeled against the pavement while being dragged. Dragged-by-car animals typically have severe abrasions, bruising, de-gloving injuries, and often broken bones. Catch-and-release fishing, especially with barb-less hooks as most of the catch-and-release fisher folk I know use, causes a small puncture in the mouth, rather like getting your lip pierced. You go on and judge which is worse.

But Byrne says that even if people lose jobs in the fishing industry through the success of the campaign, they could find work in more sea-kitten-friendly environments.

"So as there is less of a demand for foods like fish, there is more of a demand for other foods, and jobs open up in those industries," Byrne says.

Right. Because everyone knows that pulling nets on a boat or working in a fishery is EXACTLY the same as farming soybeans.

Ah, ACME. Excellent when used right, downright catastrophic when not.
