Amputee kitty came in today for a photo shoot, he's looking GREAT. Skinless area is about half the size it was last month, healing much faster than i expected.

Distemper puppy's procrastinating owners finally called back. Seems puppy hadn't eaten anything for the last 4 fucking days and they hadn't gotten around to calling. Grrrr. Long story short, she was getting worse and we ended up putting her down today.

And a new one for you all to cross your fingers for--the 5 minutes before closing emergency tonight was a sweet little lab mix dog with an arrow run through her. By miracle or luck, it went in the neck and back and up, arrow head ended up above her last ribs, without actually entering the lung field or whacking open her jugular or carotid on the way by. So we removed the arrow and started her on heavy-duty antibiotics and anti-inflamatories. Send good vibes.

For those few of you who are following some of my cases:

The hydrocephalus-is-not-caused-by-worms folks have not called back in. I don't know if the pup died on its own or is still around. (http://draggonlaady.livejournal.com/71971.html)

Procrastinating Bloke and his coughing puppy--I've got lab results back from WSU, but I can't tell them that, because the house phone is never answered, the cel number they gave me gets me a men's clothing store in Spokane, and nobody has responded the message I left at the message number (his ex-wife, apparently). Since I can't get in touch with them, I don't know how this dog is doing either. (http://draggonlaady.livejournal.com/70967.html)

I've called several times to try to get an update on the dog who'd been shot. Have left messages on the machine 2 or 3 times. Have not been called back. (http://draggonlaady.livejournal.com/69291.html)

Broken-femur dog that the owners wouldn't allow surgery on is apparently doing "as well as can be expected." (http://draggonlaady.livejournal.com/69007.html)

Cracked has not called back with any updates as to how Evil Beast Dog is walking, or whether she's able to get his medication down him. (http://draggonlaady.livejournal.com/68458.html, http://draggonlaady.livejournal.com/62833.html, http://draggonlaady.livejournal.com/60430.html)

(Are you all sensing a trend here yet?)

But I'm ignoring all the incommunicado people and focusing on the cat from August, (amputated a leg, sent him to WSU for a transfusion and feeding tube, and who later had a large patch of skin die and slough off--jnau, you remember him, even if nobody else does) is doing good. Racing all over the house, jumping up on the chair and climbing into the bed unassisted. Skin is slowly growing back.

from last night.

ended up going in for rechecks on the seizuring dog and the sick foal at midnight, 3am, and 5:30 am, then to work for the rest of the day at 8am. happily, they both survived and went home--hopeful that i won't be seeing the foal again any time soon, but the dog i'm sure will be back, in a few weeks if not days.

ah well.

oh, update on the 3-legged kitty; other than having lost a huge chunk of skin over his back and the stump of the amputated leg, he's doing grand. eating well, getting around on his remaining legs, even started going up stairs now. so just a matter of waiting for all the skin to grow back in :)

My amputee kitty is back in today for a recheck. He's been walking on his remaining leg, getting steadier balance and greater mobility. Started eating on his own, and generally has a much improved attitude. Unfortunately, he's got a large patch of dead skin which crosses his back and comes down both thighs. Debrided part of that today, leaving the outside face of the "stump" as a partially open wound (too much space to close the skin over all of it). The rest will have to come off eventually, but for now am leaving it on to act as a sort of self-bandage/protection for the underlying tissue.

updates on cats.

the amputee cat from a few days ago is doing poorly. became acutely lethargic and icteric on sunday, so i sent him to WSU today. his red blood cell count has dropped severely, so he got a blood transfusion this afternoon, hopefully that'll help. but they weren't sure why he was breaking down all his red blood cells, so not sure if they can stop it :(

the diabetic cat is now down to 1 unit twice daily and i'm hoping to wean him entirely off insulin and just maintain him with diet in a few weeks :)

I get to do massively cool things, like today...

I was presented this morning with a young neutered tom cat who'd been hit by a car. Front half of the cat was normal. Back half, not so much; his left femur (and attached quadriceps muscles) was protruding outward through the 6" long gash in his flank. Amazingly, the cat was still alive when he was handed to me. Even more amazingly (yes, that's my infinite self-confidence speaking) he's STILL alive, though now he's a tri-pod.

So at first, I thought it was a dislocation that had been pushed out--but radiographs show that he's missing the left back quarter of his pelvis. So I suspect that originally the chunk of pelvis was attached to the femur, and stuck out of the side of the cat. Which means that now it's probably laying alongside the road somewhere. Guess it's alright, he doesn't need it anymore since he doesn't have a leg there anyway. But it's still pretty dramatic to think about.

Now I expect all of you out there to be sending good thoughts/vibes/happies his way--I want this cat to do the incredible and survive this!
