Bruce got a lovely and exciting phone call tonight (7pm...anybody know the latest time allowed for calls like this? I seem to recall hearing they weren't supposed to call except between 8am and 6pm?). It seems that DirecTv, despite never having contacted him with a bill, has turned him over to collections to the tune of about $500.

So. No bills have been received, so how could he pay? When questioned about this, Collectionsbloke has no explanation, just demands payment. We've never heard of the company that Collectionsbloke called from, and when asked for proof that he was calling with an actual bill and not just a scam, he got quite rude and again demanded immediate payment. When Bruce says he needs to talk to DirecTv and find out what exactly these charges ARE (seeing as how he hasn't had service for over a year, what with living out in the boonies where DirecTv doesn't offer service) and try to get things figured out, Collectionsbloke says he's putting his account down as "refusal to pay". Bruce says he's not refusing to pay if it's an actual debt, but since he's never gotten a bill from DirecTv, and Collectionsbloke has yet to offer any proof that the bill actually exists, he's sure as Hell not breaking out his credit card. Argument devolves, and is transferred to Supervisor.

Supervisor is at least polite, but still doesn't have any explanation of what the charges are supposed to be for. So she puts him on hold to call DirecTv.

Someone who claims to be from DirecTv comes on the line, but says that she can't access his account to explain the charges. In the midst of giving him DirecTv's contact address (since apparently this has to be done by mail, and not by phone, despite the late-evening phone call that started all this), she disconnects.

So Bruce looks up DirecTv's phone number and calls them. The woman who answers tells him that she can't access his account charges either, but she can call up his basic info. And the address she gives is 3 houses ago. Which is great as an explanation of why he hasn't received a bill, EXCEPT that they somehow got his current address last month to send the box asking for the return of the leased receiver box....so why don't they have the current address NOW? They HAD it, how'd they lose it? And why didn't they send a bill with the box, if he owed them something? They obviously have his phone number, seeing as it hasn't changed (yay for cell phones!), so why didn't they contact him that way? Who the Hell organizes this crap company?

Anyhoo... email has been sent to DirecTv. Will see what results from this. Fuckers.

Call #5:
"I need to be taken off your mailing list please."
"I'll just transfer you to Customer Service, they can get that taken care of."
short hold
Zelda was much much much more helpful than the bloke last night, and other than having to repeat everything twice (English may not have been her first language, certainly American Northwest isn't her accent.) the conversation went smoothly. Hopefully this is the end of it.

Got a mailed advert for DirecTV today. To my non-profit. Because obviously my non-profit needs to subscribe to DirecTV, yes?

Call #1 to the only number listed on the page:
"I need to be taken off of your mailing list, please."
"Let me transfer you to customer service for that."
hold music....
phone is picked up by a bloke who I can NOT hear talking. I'm aware he's talking, but it's like the buzz of a voice on a radio turned too low to actually hear.
I ask him to speak louder.
That gets him up to where I can barely discern words.
He claims he can't find me in the computer system. Or something. I think. Because every other sentence, I have to ask him to speak up again.
Tries to tell me that it's probably some local provider that's sent it out, because I'm not in the system.
I finally give up, because between not being able to hear him and asking him over and over to speak up or repeat himself, and his apparent incompetence (no, I can't look it up by the address...) it was not worth continuing the conversation.
I hang up, and look at the envelope. Return address is Florida. Obviously this is not a local provider.

Call #2:
"I need to be taken off of your mailing list, please."
"Let me transfer you to customer service for that."
pause
"Your call cannot be completed as dialed, please check your number and try again."

Call #3:
4 minute wait on hold before being picked up by an "automated service" which doesn't give the option of talking to a person until you've been through 4 different recorded voices, even if you ask for "operator" when the recording asks what you need.
"One moment while I transfer you."
Back on hold. No music this time, just "please wait" repeated every 6 seconds, for about 30 seconds.
"We're sorry, your call was unable to be completed. Please hang up and dial the toll free number..."

Call #4:
On hold for 2 minutes before being picked up by the "automated service" again.
"One moment while I transfer you."
Back to the "please wait."
"We're sorry, your call was unable to be completed. Please hang up and dial the toll free number..."

Fuckit. I'm going out to dinner. I'll call the asshats again tomorrow.

Is all that was written on the box of kittens dumped at our clinic this morning. Anybody need a kitten or 4?
3 female (one black, 2 matching tuxedos) and one male (orange tabby).

In other news...

Someone from DirecTV/TV solutions called back about taking me off the advert list. Woman needs my address...which they obviously already HAVE or I wouldn't be receiving mailings, yes? Anyway, she left a message asking me to call back. Gave me her name and extension and everything... EXCEPT the phone number. I am yet more impressed with the customer service.

And a blurb from Newsweek:

What are the odds?
Heart disease is scary. So is mad cow disease. But only one of them is a good reason to give up beef. Your chance of getting heart disease in the next year is 1 in 250, compared with less than 1 in 10 billion for mad cow.
