Aug. 5th, 2009 12:12 pmSenate Bill 5402 allows a judge to ban a person from owning the same kind of animal for 2 years if that person was once convicted of abusing such an animal. A second conviction can result in a lifetime ban. This legislation has been signed into law.
House Bill 1148 extends the protections of a domestic violence restraining order to pets owned by the person who secures the order. courts could decide custody of jointly owned pets if a domestic violence protection order is taken out. The bill also bars the target of the restraining order from having contact with the pets. This legislation has been signed into law.
Senate Bill 5651 "Anti-puppy mill" bill provides parameters for facilities that raise dogs, standards of care for breeders, and specifies housing and enclosure details. The bill past the Legislature and was signed into law by the Governor on April 30.
