I was doing blood draws on a bunch of dogs for a breeder yesterday, and I realize she was trying to be complimentary with this, but...just... argh.

"You should go into the medical profession! you're really good at that."
"Yeah. I did."
"No, I mean the human medical profession..."
"And why would I want to do that? Then I'd have to treat humans."

hahaha, wow. that must be just as annoying as the people who quip "Oh, it must be free!" when their item doesn't scan the first time. Hurray for the service industry.

Why IS it that people trying to be funny or friendly always rub you the wrong way?

because the trying to be funny was done by disrespecting something i value... obviously to her, it's a much better thing to be the phlebotimist for a human doctor than it is to be the "animal doctor". which is obviously not something I agree with, or I wouldn't have dragged myself through the hell that was vetschool.

lol, no shit. Sadly, as an animal doctor, you still have to deal with the people. Lame.

I get something very similar. "Wow, your really good at that! You should be a dentist!" Dentists and assistants ask me pretty regularly why I don't go to dental school. I don't get that from patients very much since most patients assume I'm a dentist and/or don't understand the differences. But the fact that I do get it from other dental professionals is ridiculous! I went to school to do the job that I wanted to do. It is a unique confluence of skill sets and responsibilities that I *love*. If I wanted to be a dentist I would have gone to dental school. (It would have taken about the same amount of time.) The fact that even within the profession my job is still seen as somehow inferior or less desirable to being a dentist is very frustrating.

Yeah. Exactly. I get so many people who seem to think that becoming a veterinarian is a cop-out for people who can't get into a "real" medical school.
Never mind that it's actually harder to get into vet school, and that this was not an afterthought or fall-back plan, and that being a "real" doctor is somewhere lower on my list of desirable jobs than C-store clerk.

I think that's why I had to get the shirt the class of '08 sold a few years back:
Front: WSU, CVM blah blah
Back: "Real doctors treat more than one species."

I think we should mass produce it with a horse's ass on the front instead. =)
