once again proving they aren't all that smart.

ALF is claiming:
"On the morning of October 9th, we raided a deer farm located at 32155 S Grimm Road in Molalla, OR. A large section of fencing was stripped away allowing the captive deer herd a chance to escape into the surrounding forest...Although raised in captivity, the deer remain genetically wild and fully capable of survival on their own without human intervention."

Owner of the farm (Richard Bentley), says however:
"Not a single animal left the property. There were no deer on the land where the fence was cut, despite ALF claims." Bentley adds "it's ironic that if the deer had been freed, they would have likely wandered into nearby woods during deer hunting season."

So much for surviving with no human intervention. They're smart enough to stick around where they get fed, not wander off to be shot at. ALF members, on the other hand, apparently lack the smarts to read a calendar. You'd think they'd be all over hunting season, wouldn't you? effing idiocy.

Bwahahahaha!

That's just all I can say about that.

Exactly. It's like a bad joke, isn't it?

Well... they only said without "human" intervention. Hunting season is a human thing. Technically they might have been right... without humans, incl. hunters, the deer might have been save even outside of the farm. Maybe even safer than in a place where they would be slaughtered eventually (I presume.)

Except that they're not native wildlife, they're imported from Europe. So they'd be out of their accustomed climate, competing with the pre-existing (and at times overwhelming) population of White Tail Deer that ARE bred and used to being here. Also, they've never had to forage for themselves. It snows, rancher brings hay. That's how winter works, right? And it's coming up fast on winter...
There have been a couple studies (I forget my citation right now, sorry) of released populations of other species, and pretty consistently half die within the first month. Half of the remaining half die within the two months after that, so you get only 1/4 of the original population surviving at all; whether they set up a feral breeding population depends on the particular circumstances, but I'm guessing that in a place with as much population pressure as there is around here (by which I mean Oregon, Montana, Idaho, and Washington) with the booming populations of White Tailed Deer, the Fallow Deer would have a bugger of a time squeezing in. Hard to chop out a space in an already over-full to the point of starvation niche.

So at least staying on the farm means they'll be well fed until a quick and (if done right) painless death (or kept around to breed) instead of starving in a snow bank in the woods.

I didn't realize there was a market for commercial deer meat. Or elk for that matter. There's an elk farm not too far from here, and yet you never see elk at the grocery store. Well, at least I don't, but then I can't say I've ever really looked. I assume my digestive system would react the same to elk and deer meat at this point as it does to cow and pig meat. Which is to say badly. Very badly. So do they sell it in the stores? Or do they tend to run their own packing/sales departments on location?

More likely to find it at a restaurant than Safeway. There was, when I lived down there, a little place in the mall that did elk roasts, bison burgers, and emu burgers.

I don't know... can you eat chicken? the main advantage of venison (at least, wild venison) is that it's a lot lower fat than beef. Don't know if the same holds true for farmed venison though.

Sadly, that place in the mall died a LONG time ago. It was replaced with a nearly as good little cafe, with killer broccoli cheese soup. Then the mall refused to renew their lease, and instead brought in a mediocre pizza place that expanded and took two stores instead of only one.

And yes, I can eat chicken and turkey breast without problem, and dark meat usually without trouble as well, though I eat less of it because it's usually mixed in with other stuff, rather than a big slab of meat. And of course fish. All the fish in the world!

I don't think my problem is with the fat content. I think I just stopped eating it so many, many years ago, that my body simply doesn't produce the correct enzymes for that protein type in sufficient quantity. It's not a true allergy, I can have a taste of somebody's prime rib, for example, without issue, and I don't get any sort of rash or hives or anything. But last time I ate half a hot dog it took 9 days to recover.

Yeah; I dunno. Cuz chicken and turkey are basically straight protein with little/no fat; that's why they're better for you than beef. Maybe when you have a weekend off (so you don't have to go to work the next day in case it doesn't work well!) you can try a little venison? We have a freezer full of it if you wanna come visit sometime :)

I ate venison just fine growing up. I just went off red meat in general back in gradeschool. And it's not like I don't eat fat. Cheese probably makes up 30% of my diet. But yeah, I might take you up on that someday. I'll bring the metronidazole just in case though. :)

Ugh! That stuff is NASTY. Metronidazole's gotta be right next to mold on my list of favorite flavors.
