Animal rights extremists....

once again proving they aren't all that smart.
ALF is claiming:
"On the morning of October 9th, we raided a deer farm located at 32155 S Grimm Road in Molalla, OR. A large section of fencing was stripped away allowing the captive deer herd a chance to escape into the surrounding forest...Although raised in captivity, the deer remain genetically wild and fully capable of survival on their own without human intervention."
Owner of the farm (Richard Bentley), says however:
"Not a single animal left the property. There were no deer on the land where the fence was cut, despite ALF claims." Bentley adds "it's ironic that if the deer had been freed, they would have likely wandered into nearby woods during deer hunting season."
So much for surviving with no human intervention. They're smart enough to stick around where they get fed, not wander off to be shot at. ALF members, on the other hand, apparently lack the smarts to read a calendar. You'd think they'd be all over hunting season, wouldn't you? effing idiocy.

Date: 2010-10-16 03:30 pm (UTC)There have been a couple studies (I forget my citation right now, sorry) of released populations of other species, and pretty consistently half die within the first month. Half of the remaining half die within the two months after that, so you get only 1/4 of the original population surviving at all; whether they set up a feral breeding population depends on the particular circumstances, but I'm guessing that in a place with as much population pressure as there is around here (by which I mean Oregon, Montana, Idaho, and Washington) with the booming populations of White Tailed Deer, the Fallow Deer would have a bugger of a time squeezing in. Hard to chop out a space in an already over-full to the point of starvation niche.
So at least staying on the farm means they'll be well fed until a quick and (if done right) painless death (or kept around to breed) instead of starving in a snow bank in the woods.

Date: 2010-10-16 06:41 pm (UTC)I don't know... can you eat chicken? the main advantage of venison (at least, wild venison) is that it's a lot lower fat than beef. Don't know if the same holds true for farmed venison though.

Date: 2010-10-16 07:05 pm (UTC)And yes, I can eat chicken and turkey breast without problem, and dark meat usually without trouble as well, though I eat less of it because it's usually mixed in with other stuff, rather than a big slab of meat. And of course fish. All the fish in the world!
I don't think my problem is with the fat content. I think I just stopped eating it so many, many years ago, that my body simply doesn't produce the correct enzymes for that protein type in sufficient quantity. It's not a true allergy, I can have a taste of somebody's prime rib, for example, without issue, and I don't get any sort of rash or hives or anything. But last time I ate half a hot dog it took 9 days to recover.
